Prof. Mariela Gemisheva, PhD, teacher in the Department of Fashion Design at the National Academy of Art, is this year's winner of the Conceptually Ethical Fashion Project special award from the CodeFashion Awards 2024 presented by Code Fashion TV, part of the CodeMedia Group family.
The award in the category "Conceptually Ethical Fashion Project" is awarded for overall presence of the artist on the fashion and art scene in Bulgaria and abroad over the last 10 years.
In October 2024, in Struktura Gallery in Sofia, Mariela Gemisheva presented the installation performance "I Look and I Am" conceived as a form of presentation and "consumption" of conceptual fashion outside the traditional convention and function of fashion design; fashion is presented both as a media and as an experimental field, where clothing is only a means of playing with one's own personality or for a kind of exploration of the relationships between personality and clothing. The action also features an emblematic self-portrait of Mariela Gemisheva under the project "Out of Myself" (2002), whithin which after a purposeful flirtation with her own design she reaches absolute liberation from it. It is no coincidence that "I Look and I Am" takes place 22 years later as an action exploring the so-called sustainable or slow fashion.
Self-knowledge is the main function and meaning of contemporary ethical clothing, says Mariela Gemisheva.
