In 2026, the Department of Woodcarving at the National Academy of Art will celebrate the 125th anniversary since its establishment. The exhibition is one of the accompanying events with which the National Academy of Art and the Department of Woodcarving mark this historical moment.
The exhibition will feature works by students pursuing the Bachelor's degree programme and will, too, include panels telling the Department's history. A brief presentation on the chronological development of the Department will be made by Ch. Asst. Prof. Maria Miteva from the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The exhibition opening at the St Luka Gallery will be attended by Assoc. Prof. Robert Tsanev, Head of the Department of Woodcarving, Prof. Petar Bonev, Ch. Asst. Prof. Maria Miteva from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Asst. Prof. Iliyan Ivanov, and students from the Department.
Woodcarving is one of the first departments created in 1900 at the National Academy of Art. It has rich history and significant presence in the artistic life of Bulgaria – a successor to the Bulgarian Renaissance carvers. Training follows the traditions of Bulgarian art. The great diversity and application of the creative activity of the carver artist, who has graduated from the Department of Woodcarving, requires specific knowledge and skills in various fields of visual art. Basic disciplines, such as Sculpture and Drawing, are mastered in parallel, which allows the solving of various problems in the artistic and creative spheres, including independent design and creation of works of art, scientific research and other activities. Students who have obtained the educational and qualification Bachelor degree are prepared for individual creative work and creation of works of art in the field of plastic arts. They possess the necessary knowledge and practical skills for design and construction in the field of interior and furniture design, household items and exterior plastic arts, as well as for teaching activities at training centres, training courses and secondary schools of art, provided they have completed a second degree programme in Theory and Practice of Art Education. In addition to the knowledge and skills listed above, graduates who have obtained the educational and qualification Master degree possess and further develop their qualities for individual creation of artworks with a unique style.
The event is part of the project "The Departments at the National Academy of Art" being implemented by St Luka National High School of Applied Arts jointly with the National Academy of Art.
