We are witnessing the second edition of the International Student Biennial DRAWING – Sofia – 2014.

The participants – Academy of Fine Arts – Venice, Italy; Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts – Istanbul, Turkey; National University of Arts – Bucharest, Romania; University of the Basque Country – Bilbao, Spain; Geppert Academy of Art and Design – Wroclaw, Poland; University of Applied Sciences “Justinas Vienožinskis” – Faculty of Arts – Kaunas, Lithuania and the National Academy of Art – Sofia, Bulgaria, present their exhibitions in the Gallery of our Academy.

Each collection conveys the character and research of the authors, but also something more – the tendencies and views of Drawing in different art schools in Europe.
I observed carefully the drawings when taking them out of the folders and tubes. Human figures, still life, portraits and compositions seem to be sealed on them through minimum material resources, the ones of Drawing. More abstract or close to natural image, they transmit the perception of shape, texture and space. In black and white, by lines or tones, by means of contour drawing or silhouette, another space and another matter is created – the one of spirit, of searching and discovering, treasuring intentions, emotions and achievements.
Having overcome hundreds of kilometers, collected together and bringing their messages, these drawings become a bridge of cultural exchange imperceptibly making us participants in a real spiritual dialogue, perhaps most needed for the authors – Bachelors of Art and Masters of Art, as well as for their teachers.
With no doubt, the manifested interest to the Biennial from all participants as well as the achieved results starting from different drawing concepts and plastic art practices is the proof of continuous development and renewal of Drawing and of its vitality.
I believe that the Student Biennial in Sofia is necessary not only for the process of drawing and Drawing as an art work, but it also unites and connects close and distant points of the geographical map of Europe and brings us closer, makes us more comprehensible and more needful to each other.
