NIGHT OF LITERATURE 2025

2025.09.15

24 September 2025 (Wednesday), 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Academia Gallery, 1 Shipka Street, Sofia

The Academia Gallery at the National Academy of Art will open its doors to the world of literature as one of the “reading nests” in the 14th edition of the Night of Literature. On 24 September 2025, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, simultaneously in 11 towns and cities in Bulgaria, famous personalities will read excerpts from contemporary European poetry and prose published after 2000 and in Bulgarian.

On the Night of Literature 2025, the Academia Gallery at the National Academy of Art (1 Shipka Street) will host the Embassy of Finland, which will select the book “The Moomins and the Great Flood” by the beloved Finnish author Tove Jansson (1914–2001). The readings begin at 6:00 pm and the same book will be read every half hour in each “reading nest”.

The role of the reader will be played by Boyana Stoyanova, a fourth-year student in Scandinavian Studies at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Strongly interested in languages, literature and art, Boyana is the winner of the first prize for translating poetry from Danish into Bulgarian in the competition named after Prof. Vera Gancheva (2025).

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the first edition of the Moomins stories and the first book in the series – “The Moomins and the Great Flood”. Today, the Moomins are the most famous and familiar part of Tove Jansson’s works.

The Academia Gallery is a landmark cultural space for the capital, which presents a rich programme of exhibitions by established and young artists from the Bulgarian and international scene, as well as a number of other forums, publication presentations, film screenings, scientific conferences and more. Its participation as a “reading nest” in the Night of Literature emphasises its role as a dynamic place for dialogue between different forms of art.

NIGHT OF LITERATURE 2025 is part of the Sofia City Municipality’s 2025 Cultural Events Calendar and is organised by the Read Sofia Foundation, Sofia City Municipality, EUNIC, the Children’s Books Foundation and numerous foreign cultural institutes and embassies.
