The National Academy of Art presented the results from the second plein air TOWARDS THE SOURCE in an exhibition

2024.09.12

The academic plein air "Towards the Source" was held for a second year in the Trakart Park – Plovdiv.  The participants explored the egg tempera technique and the possibilities it gives for creative realisations in contemporary painting.

The project manager is Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanassov, PhD, Head of the Department of Drawing at the National Academy of Art. The project participants are the doctoral students Gergana Nikolova and Yordan Velkov, and the students Lilyana Aleksandrova, Aleksandra Nikolova, Atanas Hristov, Mina Balabanova, Kaloyan Zhekov, Simona Vassileva, Denitsa Kostadinova, and Svetoslav Ninov.

The artistic task at the plein air this year was to make a portrait and a self-portrait on a wooden base, starting with gluing the canvas, priming, sanding. The paints were prepared by the students on site by using pigment and egg emulsion.

During the plein air, under the supervision of Prof. Atanassov, demonstrations were carried out that illustrated the entire process – from preparing the board (gluing the canvas, priming with chalk primer, preparation of egg emulsion with pigments), the sequence of applying the paints and varnishing of the finished work.

The works created during the plein air were shown in an exhibition at the Trakart Park, with the special participation of Georges Trak and Emannuela Kovach.

The project "Towards the Source" is financed within the framework of the 2024 Competition for Financing Projects on the Scientific Research and Artistic Activities at the National Academy of Art.
