The National Academy of Art was impressively presented at the photoSCHWEIZ forum in Zurich, Switzerland

2026.02.19

The National Academy of Art, represented by the Rector Prof. Georgi Iankov, was a special participant in one of the world's largest photography exhibitions photoSCHWEIZ, held at the Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, from the 5th to 10th February 2026. Within the special panel of the event's agenda, entitled "130 Years of National Academy of Art – Sofia", Prof. Iankov had a discussion with the founder of the Swiss forum Michel Pernet and H.E. Mr Svetlan Stoev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to Switzerland. Among the guests at the forum were Mr Georges Lux and Mr Georgi Kuzmov, Mayor of Oborishte Region in Sofia.

A highlight in the Academy's presentation was the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Master's degree programme in Photography. Included in the academic cirriculum in 2011, the programme has ever since established itself as a space for experiments and innovations, and currently training is held both in Sofia and the Academy's branch in Burgas. A special place in the Zurich forum was allocated for an exhibition of selected works by programme alumni, curated by Assoc. Prof. Ivan Kyuranov, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Rossen Toshev, PhD. The exhibition illustrates the diversity of of educational approaches, in which classic analogue techniques encounter digital technologies, and photography transforms into photo installations and video art. The presented young artists, often with different academic background in the fields of fine and applied arts, design and history of art, demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach and achieved synergy between artistic individuality and new visual language.

A key participant in the discussion was the Swiss entrepreneur Georges Luks because of his contribution to promoting Bulgarian culture and his role as commissioner and curator of the Bulgarian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Mr Luks will also be a keynote speaker at the forthcoming scientific conference with international participation, dedicated to the anniversary of the National Academy of Art.
