The National Academy of Art is the first Bulgarian institution to participate in the Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence programme for scholars in residence in the United States of America. The Academy’s scholarship holder is Prof. Dessislava Hristova-Tosheva, PhD, a lecturer in the Department of Printmaking. From January to June 2026, she will be a visiting scholar and will carry out teaching, creative and research activities at the American University of Stockton, New Jersey, USA.

The “Scholar-In-Residence” programme aims at the internationalisation of American higher education institutions by providing the opportunity to invite scholars and specialists from all over the world. The participation of Prof. Hristova-Tosheva is a high recognition not only for her personal creative and academic achievements, but also for the authority of the National Academy of Art on the international educational scene. This cultural and academic exchange contributes to the promotopm of contemporary Bulgarian art and graphic art among students and the academic community in the United States.

During her residency, Prof. Hristova-Tosheva is working on research projects related to Eastern European feminism and the role of women in art in the context of social and political change.

The first event in Prof. Hristova-Tosheva’s programme in the USA is the curatorial exhibition entitled Her / Now / Elsewhere, open to the public at the Upper Art Gallery of Stockton University until 28 March 2026. It presents works by 18 prominent Bulgarian and Bulgarian-American artists. The project has not only artistic but also social value, provoking a discussion about the cultural identity and social position of the female artist in the context of modernity.

Prof. Dessislava Hristova-Tosheva talks about her stay and activities at Stockton University under the Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence programme in an interview published in the university’s “Spotlight” section.
